Proclamation Header

 

WHEREAS, the American black bear is the only species of bear whose natural habitat is located in Nevada, and is found primarily in northwestern Nevada; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Department of Wildlife has identified the summer and fall months as an annual period with an increase in human-bear conflicts due to greater number of people living in bear habitat, an increase in the number and distribution of black bears, dry climate conditions, and access to human food sources; and

WHEREAS, bears may become conditioned to human food and habituated to people, which may embolden their behavior causing them to rummage through unsecured garbage bins, or enter residences; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Department of Wildlife is taking proactive leadership role in non-lethal bear management to solve human-bear conflicts with the use of Karelian Bear, Dogs and Aversive Conditioning; and

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of all Nevadans to observe public safety regulations and precautions, including instructions to remain from feeding wildlife, and to properly secure their garbage and pet food, and to remove attractants whether at home or camping; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada encourages all residents and tourists who live or play in bear habitat to maintain a safe distance, and never approach or feed a bear, and to practice Bear Logic habits including the use of wildlife-resistant containers;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  July, 2016
