WHEREAS, Lake Tahoe is known for its beauty and remarkable transparency and is a natural jewel in the Sierra Nevada drawing visitors worldwide to enjoy the breathtaking views and unique environment; and

WHEREASthe Tahoe Basin has become increasingly urbanized and studies have shown that human development has had a significant impact to the landscape, streams, air quality and the Lake itself and the University of California, Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) was created in 2004 to extend and broaden the work at Lake Tahoe that was initiated by Professor Charles Goldman in 1959; and

WHEREAS, under founding Director Dr. Geoffrey Schladow, TERC has broadened its mission to use Lake Tahoe as a global example of a fragile ecosystem facing severe anthropogenic challenges. Working in partnership with research institutions and State and federal agencies, TERC is developing solutions that can be applied at Lake Tahoe and other freshwater ecosystems around the world. The long-term data record that was initiated in 1959 is being extended and broadened so a more complete record of the interactions between water resources, ecosystem well-being and human intervention can be quantified and used as a basis for future action; and

WHEREAS, TERC is a global leader in research, education, and public outreach on lakes that provides critical scientific information to help understand, restore, and sustain the Lake Tahoe Basin and other systems worldwide and is dedicated to objective research and sharing information with the public; and

WHEREAS, the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences was created through a partnership between UC Davis and Sierra Nevada College, and since 2006 it has served as the base for TERCs research and education programs and as a home for researchers from around the world. Through the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences TERC presents the latest findings to visitors and hosts events to promote science education in schools and encourages lifelong learning in the Tahoe community; and

WHEREAS, the dedicated work of the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the ten year partnership with Sierra Nevada College is to be commended as it will continue to provide data and information regarding freshwater ecosystems while preserving and enhancing the magnificence of Lake Tahoe for future generations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  July 21, 2016
