WHEREAS, Ralph Victor Whitworth was born on 0ctober 12, 1955 and was raised in Winnemucca, Nevada by his loving parents who had an immensely positive impact on Ralph as a young man; and

WHEREAS, he attended Lowry High School and following graduation served as Director of Parks in Winnemucca before attending the University of Nevada and Georgetown University Law School, and he also served as an intern for Senator Paul Laxalt in Washington, D.C. and on President Ronald Reagan's re-election campaign; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Whitworth worked with Lionel, Sawyer & Collins, and later joined legendary Texas businessman, T. Boone Pickens, where he was first immersed in shareholders' rights issues. Later, Pickens asked Whitworth to head up the Washington, D.C.-based United Shareholders Association, which was formed to highlight shareholder rights issues; and

WHEREAShe was a pioneer in the field of shareholders' rights and corporate governance, and in 1996 he cofounded Relational Investors with another former Pickens' colleague, David Batchelder, a firm that helped to revolutionize the relationship between corporate management and shareholders; and

WHEREAS,he created the Ralph Whitworth Scholar Leader Scholarship Endowment which benefits business school students and, through the UNR Foundation, he provided financial assistance to the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, and helped to establish a state of the art Boys and Girls Club in Winnemucca. In 2014, after being diagnosed for the second time with throat cancer, Mr. Whitworth created the Immunology Foundation in San Diego, California; and

WHEREAS, Ralph passed away on September 29,2016 in the San Diego area, and he is survived by his wife Fernanda (Fe); children Amaya, Walker, Douglass and Ava; sisters April Whitworth, John Cook, Diana Whitworth and Susan Whitworth; and nieces Amber, Holly and Heather Holt; and

WHEREAS, Ralph was a self-made man whose intelligence, drive and determination, not to mention honesty and integrity, catapulted him to the top of the business world He was also a son of Winnemucca who never forgot his roots and was once quoted as saying, "Winnemucca will always be my hometown;"

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  October 12th, 2016 as a day in honor of

 Ralph Victor Whitworth
