CARSON CITY, NV - April 18, 2018

Governor Brian Sandoval has signed Executive Order 2018-7, establishing the Southern Nevada Sporting Event Committee. The Order allows the Sporting Event Committee to comprise a local organizing committee for the National Football League (NFL) Draft or other potential events. The committee will also evaluate whether the Legislature should establish a permanent Sports Committee.

“I was excited to hear that Las Vegas is one of five finalists under consideration to host the NFL Draft in 2019 or 2020,” Governor Brian Sandoval said. “Las Vegas is home to the Golden Knights hockey franchise, a United Soccer League team, the Las Vegas Aces basketball team, a Triple-A baseball team and will soon be the home of the Raiders football franchise. With the new Nevada and the existence of these teams in Las Vegas, additional opportunities to attract major sporting events and associated activities to our state are arising, especially with the addition of the new stadium. As such, I believe it is prudent for the Sporting Event Committee to examine the possibilities and report back to me and the Legislature on what’s possible and how Nevada might secure new and bigger sporting events.”

Membership of the Southern Nevada Sporting Event Committee includes: the Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development; the Chairman of the Stadium Authority Board; the Mayor of the City of Las Vegas; the Chair of the Clark County Commission; the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce; the Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education; one or more representatives of professional sports teams based in Nevada or committed to locating in Nevada; the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority; the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Las Vegas Events; six representatives of the Nevada Resort Association and any other person deemed necessary by the Governor. The Governor will appoint the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Committee and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development will provide administrative support to the Committee.

The Southern Nevada Sporting Event Committee is required to submit a report to the Governor and the Legislative Commission on or before December 31, 2018.
