CARSON CITY, NV - May 24, 2017

Governor Brian Sandoval today signed 20 bills into law including dual enrollment, a bill sponsored by the Nevada Youth Legislature, and victims’ rights measures.

“Today we took major steps toward empowering victims of crime and ensuring that our youth have greater access to justice and critical resources,” said Governor Sandoval. “By working together, we also improved our delivery of education by introducing diversity and ethnic studies, improving criminal law curriculum, and removing barriers for students who would like to pursue dual enrollment.”

Assembly Bill 145

Was sponsored by Assemblywoman Lisa Krasner and extends the statute of limitations for a child sexual abuse victim from 10 years to 20 years after the victim reaches 18 years of age. The bill also extends the time by which a civil action to recover damages arising from the appearance of a minor in a pornographic video can be commenced. The bill passed unanimously and becomes effective immediately.

Assembly Bill 247

Sponsored by Assemblyman Steve Yeager, allows for the early termination of a lease agreement by a tenant who is a victim of harassment, stalking, or sexual assault.

Assembly Bill 305

Is an executive agency bill that requires all schools in the state to display a poster which includes the number of a toll-free hotline for receiving reports of abuse or neglect of a child.

Senate Bill 108

Is the 2017 measure introduced by the Nevada Youth Legislature. The bill requires the State Board of Education to study the manner in which instruction related to criminal law should be included in high school social studies coursework, particularly crimes which frequently involve individuals who are younger than 18. Specifically, this bill calls for studies of crimes related to sexual conduct and assault, alcohol and controlled substances, domestic violence, stalking and destruction of property. This bill passed both houses unanimously.

Senate Bill 19

Was originally introduced by Governor Sandoval during his State of the State address. This bill directly supports the Governor’s 2017 workforce reform agenda, as his vision to put all Nevadans, regardless of age or circumstance, on a career pathway toward success. This legislation will expand dual enrollment opportunities for all Nevada students by minimizing cost barriers, institutional obstacles, and other challenges that may be preventing students from pursuing dual credit coursework.
