Governor Brian Sandoval signed 19 additional bills into law this evening and vetoed 2. Tonight’s measures enacted include a Juvenile Justice Bill of Rights, authorization of same-sex marriage in Nevada Revised Statute, and suicide prevention training for healthcare professionals.

AB 180, sponsored by Assemblywoman Monroe-Moreno codifies a Juvenile Justice Bill of Rights, and requires that a child detention facility provide a copy of those rights to a child or legal guardian of the child, and to post a copy of the rights afforded in a conspicuous place in the facility. The rights outlined include the right to be treated with dignity and respect, to have fair and equal access to services and treatment, to access educational programs, to receive adequate nutrition, access to medical care, regular visits with family and legal counsel, and to communicate confidentially child welfare staff, clergy members, or other support personnel.

AB 229 was sponsored by Assemblywoman Ellen Spiegel and codifies U.S. Supreme Court precedent in which the Court held that the right to marry is a fundamental right that cannot be denied to same-sex couples. AB229 authorizes the marriage of two persons, regardless of gender, and revises NRS to reflect that same-sex couples have the same parental rights as traditional married couples.

AB 105 mandates two hours of continuing education relating to evidence-based suicide prevention and awareness for providers of health care.
