Sandoval Announces Planning Meeting to Examine Prescription Drug Crisis

Creates Timeline for Summit to Discuss Best Practices and Strategies for Improvement

Governor Brian Sandoval today announced the details for the Prescription Drug Abuse planning session which will serve as the precursor to a two-day Summit to be held in Las Vegas at the end of August, 2016. The planning session will take place on June 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Legislative Building in Carson City and video conferenced to the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas. Members of the committee will listen to presentations from state agencies, licensing boards, public comment, and other community stakeholders on prescription drug prescribing practices, options for treatment, criminal justice interventions, and challenges and opportunities in our state. The committee will also hear public comment on the issue of prescription drug abuse in our communities.

The information gathered will be used by the planning committee and the Governor’s office to inform and prepare the agenda for the two-day Summit at the end of August.

The Governor also released a tentative agenda for the planning meeting.

This agenda was created with the intention of gathering preliminary information that will assist the Governor, First Lady, state and local agencies in building a program focused on these four priority topics:

  1. Duties and responsibilities of healthcare licensing boards
  2. Overview of current coordination and opportunities for expanded collaboration with local, state and federal law enforcement
  3. Review of existing rehabilitation practices and substance abuse treatments
  4. Cooperation and oversight for private sector issues, including sale and availability of pharmaceuticals
