Governor Brian Sandoval today announced he has appointed Victor Wakefield to the Nevada State Board of Education District 1 vacancy, effective June 5, 2015.

“The State Board of Education will play a critical role in implementing many of the newly established categorical programs aimed at student achievement and their respective accountability measures,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “Victor has extensive experience recruiting high-quality teachers and placing them in Nevada’s public schools to the benefit of our students. I am pleased he has agreed to serve in this manner and believe he will bring an educator’s perspective to this important body.”

Victor Wakefield is currently the executive director of Teach For America (TFA)-Las Vegas Valley, where he leads the organization’s work to recruit, select, and train talented teachers to help provide educational opportunity for students in the Las Vegas Valley.

“I am excited and honored to be appointed to Nevada’s state board of education to work in partnership with the local community to help serve as an advocate and visionary for students in Nevada and ensure that all kids receive an excellent education,” said Victor Wakefield.

Victor began his career in education in 2007 as a language arts teacher at the West Gary Lighthouse Charter School in Gary, Indiana. After seeing the transformational potential of teachers, Victor joined Teach For America's recruitment team and led efforts to recruit exceptional and diverse leaders to teach in low income schools at Duke University and Princeton University, his alma mater. Since 2011 he has served as the Las Vegas Valley Executive Director and in this capacity leads TFA’s regional efforts in Southern Nevada

Beginning in Fall 2015, Victor will join Teach For America’s national team as Senior Vice President, Regional Operations. Victor resides in Downtown Las Vegas.
