Governor Brian Sandoval and First Lady Kathleen Sandoval are announcing the Nevada School Breakfast Challenge Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 1:15 p.m.
The couple will be joined by personnel from the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA), Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dale Erquiaga and local schoolchildren at Empire Elementary School in Carson City to announce the statewide challenge. Walmart is donating $5,000 for challenge prizes.
The School Breakfast Challenge aims to increase breakfast participation in Nevada by 20 percent. Schools that take part in the challenge can receive technical assistance and equipment to improve their breakfast programs. The schools that see the largest gains in participation will receive prizes and other incentives when the challenge ends in the spring.

||The national school breakfast program is proven to decrease discipline and behavioral problems, visits to the school nurse and tardiness in schools, while increasing student attentiveness and attendance. Studies also find that students who eat school breakfast show improved reading and math skills, as well as higher scores on standardized tests.
