Governor Brian Sandoval today announced he has appointed, for the first time in Nevada history, a state Superintendent of Public Instruction. Based in Las Vegas, James W. Guthrie will become Nevada’s Superintendent of Public Instruction effective April 2. The selection of Guthrie as Superintendent follows unanimous support for Guthrie from the State Board of Education.

“I would like to thank the State Board of Education for their diligence in conducting interviews for this position,” Governor Sandoval said. “Today marks the first time in Nevada’s history a Governor exercised the appointment authority in selecting the state Superintendent of Public Instruction. After the passage of education reform in the last legislative session, for Nevada to have access to a figure with a national reputation is the perfect next step. I am honored and thrilled Dr. Guthrie has agreed to help lead Nevada as we continue strengthening education in our great state.”

Guthrie, currently the Senior Fellow and Director of Education Policy Studies at the George W. Bush Institute, has also been a Professor of Education Policy and Leadership at the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education at Southern Methodist University. Guthrie has a B.A. from Stanford University in Physical Anthropology, a M.A. from Stanford in Educational Administration and earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Stanford. Guthrie has completed two Postdoctoral Fellowships, one at Harvard University in Economics and Education and one at Oxford Brooks College in Oxford, UK. From 1999 to 2009, Guthrie served as the Director of the Peabody Center for Education Policy at Vanderbilt University and as Editor of the Peabody Journal of Education as well as the Peabody Education Leadership Series. From 1982 to 1983, Guthrie was the Dean of the School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. After serving as a Professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, Guthrie was an Education Specialist in the United States Senate.

From 1983 to 1994, Guthrie was the Director of Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE), Berkeley. In 1984, he served as the Irving R. Melbo Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Southern California. Guthrie has consulted the United States Senate Subcommittee on Equality of Educational Opportunity and the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and ESEA Chapter (Title) One Administration, among other issue areas. Guthrie has been honored as a Fellow with the American Education Research Association and the Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair of Educational Leadership and Policy. A published author, Guthrie has served at least 25 state governments and worked with International Organizations such as The World Bank and the Organization of American States (OAS).
