Public Interviews Scheduled For Superintendent of Public Instruction

CARSON CITY, NV - February 10, 2012

Working with the Governor’s Office’s liaison to the search, the Nevada State Board of Education has scheduled interviews for the five semi-finalists who have been chosen in the search for Nevada’s new superintendent of public instruction. The State Board will interview the candidates at public meetings on February 22 and 23. After interviewing all candidates, the Board will recommend three finalists to Governor Sandoval at a public meeting on Friday, February 24. The interview schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, February 22

  • 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. - Candidate Rene Cantu Jr., PhD
  • 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. - Candidate Magdalena Martinez, PhD
  • 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Candidate Caroline B. McIntosh, MA

Thursday, February 23

  • 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. - Candidate Sylvia L. McMullen, MEd, JD
  • 10:15 to 12:15 p.m. - Candidate James W. Guthrie, PhD

Interviews will take place in Room 4401 of the Grant Sawyer Building at 555 W. Washington Avenue in Las Vegas, and will be video conferenced to Room 3137 of the Legislative Building at 401 S. Carson Street in Carson City.

To be qualified for the position of state superintendent, an individual must have attained the age of 21 years at the time of his or her appointment and hold a master’s degree in the field of education or school administration.

On Friday, February 24 at 8:30 a.m., the State Board will make the presentation of the three finalists to the Governor. This meeting will be held in the Second Floor Conference Room of the Department of Education at 9890 S. Maryland in Las Vegas and will be video conferenced to the Board Conference Room of the Department of Education at 700 E. Fifth Street in Carson City.

Sandoval will make an appointment sometime in March. The new superintendent will replace Keith Rheault, whose retirement is effective April 1. “I am pleased with the search process for the next Superintendent of Public Instruction,” Governor Sandoval said. “I am confident that the cooperative and public process will result in the identification of three excellent candidates for my consideration.”
