Governor Brian Sandoval and Steve Hill, Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, met yesterday with representatives of the University of British Columbia (UBC) to discuss UBC’s geothermal research program. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the University of Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) Great Basin Center for Geothermal Research and included discussion of the institutions’ complementary research goals. UBC focuses on the drilling process while UNR focuses on the discovery and identification of geothermal resources.

The Governor and Director Hill also met with the Asia-Pacific Foundation, which helps to shape Canada’s policy with regard to Asian countries, on areas in which Nevada and Canada have shared interests in Asia.

“Not only does Nevada have a wealth of geothermal resources, but we also have excellent institutions focused on geothermal research,” Governor Brian Sandoval said. “Bringing new partners to the table helps our state and our partners. Today’s meetings will help lay a foundation for furthering geothermal goals in Nevada as well as help our state expand on the successes we were able to achieve on our trade mission to the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea.”

The Governor’s Trade Mission to Canada, organized by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, is focused on strengthening the businesses and economic ties between Nevada and companies within our state and Canada. The Trade Mission is also focused on identifying ways in which Nevada can leverage existing relationships to increase exports and create opportunities to partner with Higher Education.
