LAS VEGAS, NV - September 27, 2011
Governor Brian and First Lady Kathleen Sandoval today attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Village of Hope at Whitney Elementary School in Henderson.
“I was able to tour Whitney earlier this year and I was in awe of the work they do on behalf of their students,” First Lady Kathleen Sandoval said. “I knew that if we worked together, we could accomplish even more and I am thrilled to see the Village of Hope open.”
The Village of Hope, a non-profit in Las Vegas, is an afterschool program located on site at Whitney Elementary School that provides wraparound services to students and their families, an extension of the services already being provided by Whitney. An outgrowth of the vision of Whitney Principal Sherrie Gahn, the Village of Hope is a collaboration between the Children’s Cabinet and Whitney Elementary. Kathleen Sandoval is director of Family and Youth Programs at the Children’s Cabinet in Reno and Sherita Diaz works for the Children’s Cabinet at the Village of Hope.
Services include, but are not limited to: case management, after-school tutoring, credit retrieval, food pantry, clothing closet, youth empowerment programs, self-esteem building activities and education through arts and crafts.
“The services the Village of Hope provides for students and families at Whitney Elementary will enable the students and their parents to be successful in their learning environment,” Governor Sandoval said. “I am proud of the work Kathleen and Principal Sherrie Gahn have accomplished here.”
