WHEREAS, fires are powerful and unpredictable, can take lives, destroy homes and businesses, devastate communities, and our Nation has suffered tragic losses from wildfires that have ravaged States across our country, including Nevada;
WHEREAS, all Nevadans can take precautions to guard against fires by installing and maintaining smoke alarms in the places we live and work, by clearing flammable vegetation away from homes and buildings, and by preparing an emergency kit and discussing emergency evacuation plans and routes with their families;
WHEREAS, we owe a great debt to our heroic first responders and firefighters, who demonstrate courage, skill, determination, selflessness, and professionalism every day by placing themselves in danger by answering the call to battle fires and help others in need;
WHEREAS, the week of October 9 through October 15, 2016, is Fire Prevention Week and serves to remind us all to be vigilant, to take action to avert fires, and to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives fighting fires;
WHEREAS, Public Law 107-51 was enacted by the Congress of the United States and provides that the flag of the United States be lowered to half-staff at all federal buildings each year in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service;
WHEREAS, the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service is scheduled for Sunday, October 9, 2016;
WHEREAS, Article 5, Section 1 of the Nevada Constitution provides: "The supreme executive power of this State, shall be vested in a Chief Magistrate who shall be Governor of the State of Nevada."
