State of Nevada Executive Order - Executive Department



WHEREAS, former First Judicial District Court Judge Michael R. Griffin was a pillar of Carson City and the Nevada legal community; 

WHEREAS, Judge Griffin was born on December 9, 1943, a fourth-generation Nevadan, who descended from Irish and Italian pioneers that first settled in Nevada prior to its statehood;

WHEREAS, raised in Carson City, Judge Griffin graduated from Carson High School in 1961, graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1965, and graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1968, and thereafter served as a Judge Advocate General Lawyer for the United States Army;

WHEREAS, Judge Griffin was admitted to the Nevada State Bar in 1968, and was elected in 1978 to the First Judicial District Court of Nevada;

WHEREAS, Judge Griffin served on the bench for 28 years, presided in nearly every courthouse in the State, and is known to have been one of the longest-serving district court judges in Nevada history;

WHEREAS, Judge Griffin was married to his wife, Jill, for more than 45 years and they raised three children Gina, John, and Matt;

WHEREAS, Judge Griffin loved his family, his many friends, his music, the law, and Nevada;

WHEREAS, Judge Griffin passed away on August 17, 2016, and has left a legacy of respect and decency that will endure long after his passing, and the thoughts and prayers of Nevadans are with his family and loved ones; and

WHEREAS, Article 5, Section 1 of the Nevada Constitution provides: "The supreme executive power of this State, shall be vested in a Chief Magistrate who shall be Governor of the State of Nevada."

NOW, THEREFORE, by the authority vested in me as Governor by the Constitution and laws of the State of Nevada and the United States, it is hereby ordered as follows:

The flags of the United States and the State of Nevada shall be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and all State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Friday, August 26, 2016, as a mark of respect and in remembrance of Judge Griffin.
