ORDERING FLAGS TO HALF STAFF
WHEREAS, the Honorable Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Susan W. Scann passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2016;
WHEREAS, Judge Scann earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington in 1968 and her law degree from the California Western School of Law in 1976;
WHEREAS, Judge Scann was admitted to the Nevada State Bar in 1977 and was among one of the first 100 women to become a member;
WHEREAS, Judge Scann served as an alternate judge for the City of Las Vegas Municipal Court for nearly three decades before being elected to serve as the District Court Judge for Department 29 of the Eighth Judicial District Court in 2010;
WHEREAS, Judge Scann was a well-respected jurist who was known and will be remembered for her experience, work ethic, and friendly demeanor;
WHEREAS, Judge Scann was a wife, a mother, and a grandmother, and the thoughts and prayers of Nevadans are with her family, loved ones, and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Article 5, Section 1 of the Nevada Constitution provides: "The supreme executive power of this State, shall be vested in a Chief Magistrate who shall be Governor of the State of Nevada."
NOW, THEREFORE, by the authority vested in me as Governor by the Constitution and laws of the State of Nevada and the United States, it is hereby ordered as follows:
The flags of the United States and the State of Nevada shall be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and all State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, July 23, 2016, as a mark of respect and in remembrance of Judge Scann.
